Cowley Hill Farm was, originally, a Dairy Farm and it included the entire 120 acres of land surrounding it. The main barn, which now houses 21 stables, was a cow shed and milking parlour, the Pole Barn was used as a hay barn and there was just one other barn which was a cow shed. The dairy farm closed down in the 1970s and stood empty for many years.
In the 1980s, the farm was split between arable and grazing land and the farmhouse was also separated from the farm. With 32 acres of land, Cowley Hill Farm was then rented out and converted into a stable yard.
Robin, who has worked in the Hertfordshire farming industry for twenty five years, took the stable yard over in 2000. He built five new stables in the main barn, put a new hay barn up, converted the Pole Barn into stables (which now house his horses) and converted the additional cow shed into a workshop for his own use. A lot of money was injected into refurbishing the buildings, the fields (with water troughs), fencing, extending the arena, installing a lunge ring and building a gallop track.
In its time, Cowley Hill Livery Stables has been run as a fully-staffed, full livery yard, a DIY yard and plenty of versions in between. Robin now lives on site with his wife, two dogs, two cats and two horses and Cowley Hill Livery Stables is run as a DIY yard with services catering up to 7-day full livery.
